Several months ago an RTA bus killed a pedestrian in a cross walk. I read yesterday, that the bus driver was talking on her cell phone. RTA strictly prohibits bus drivers from using cell phones and listening devices while driving. But,why do we as a society still permit drivers to talk on cell phones while piloting one ton of metal around pedestrians, kids playing on front lawns or school zones. Some cities (Brooklyn, OH) and states (New York) have bans, but for the most part, it is not illegal to drive while distracted. The city of Cleveland recently passed a law that prohibits texting while driving, but carrying on a conversation while driving is still permitted. Objectors of cell phone bans argue that there are other distractions too, like the radios and/or navigation systems. I say, we can't allow all the distractions, we need to minimize distractions to keep drivers focused on the environment around them. Ban cell phone use while driving. Let me know what you think. Have you seen someone driving dangerously while talking n a cell phone? Do you think a ban on cell phones while driving would make the streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists and kids?
